OCOM Student Wellness
OCOM’s culture focuses on student wellness. The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. OCOM has built the student experience around the balance of wellness using the American Osteopathic Association's 8 Dimensions of Wellness as adapted from SAMHSA’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness. Each dimension of wellness can affect the overall quality of life. Through its Wellness Initiative, SAMHSA encourages individuals, organizations, and communities to work toward longer, healthier, and happier lives, particularly among people living with behavioral health conditions. The Eight Dimensions of Wellness take into account not only an individual’s physical health but all the factors that contribute to a person’s overall wellness.
Wellness in Medicine
Wellness is the balance of a physician’s emotional, financial, social, spiritual, occupational, physical, intellectual, and environmental health. These 8 Dimensions of Wellness align with the osteopathic approach to mind, body, and spirit. The following descriptions are adapted from SAMHSA’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
